Hey friends! I have a little story to share with you today about a bathroom. Where it’s been, and where it’s going, it’s hopes and dreams. This bathroom has kind of a sad history, and it has never really been able to live up to it’s full potential before in all of it’s 21 years. It wanted to be a good bathroom, it really did! But instead, it was neglected. No one really paid much attention to it, or used it much for that matter. No one really gave it much thought at all. They were too busy worrying about the upstairs bathrooms to think about how lonely this downstairs bathroom might feel. But this little bathroom had hopes and dreams, and so wished that it could have someone to help it reach it full potential. Luckily, this little bathroom and I found each other, and I really want to help all of his dreams come true. I want this bathroom to feel bright, cheerful, and free. So today I want to share a few little glimpses with you of Changes in our Downstairs Bathroom, where it started when we moved into the house, and where it is headed. It’s not finished yet, but it sure has come a long way!
Changes in our Downstairs Bathroom
This next picture is what the bathroom looked like in the MLS listing when we were purchasing the house. There are two full bathrooms upstairs as well, and no one really lived downstairs, so I don’t really think this bathroom was ever used much by the previous owners.
Jump forward a few months, and this next picture shows what we did with the bathroom upon moving in. My teenage daughter took over the downstairs bedroom, which had previously been used as a play room, and therefore, this became her bathroom. She was so happy to be getting her own bathroom! She chose this pink paint color, and we brought the cabinet you see here over the toilet from our old home and hung it for some temporary extra storage for the room. Still though, the room was just OK. It had builder grade everything, and no light over the sink. And make sure you catch a glimpse of the sorry looking linoleum, sexy! I never could understand why in all of it’s 16 years, no one ever thought to put a light over the mirror in here! It is something I wanted to do the minute we moved in, but it wasn’t in the budget at the time, and was beyond our capabilities to do ourselves.
We did get around to eventually doing a small makeover to this bathroom, on a very tight budget. We painted the existing vanity cabinet white and changed out the knobs. It had some water damaged, but we just couldn’t afford to replace the cabinet. We put it on a list of things that would be done in the future when budget allowed. We even painted the sink! That was definitely a temporary fix. It looked great when it was finished, but over the course of being used regularly over two years or so, it just had to go. It did not wear well at all. We replaced the builder grade mirror with a framed mirror that I picked up at a consignment shop. I DIYe’d some shelves and we replaced the ugly cabinet over the toilet. And we laid vinyl tiles. It was much improved, but we knew that we would be upgrading even more in the future.
Fast forward a couple more years, and we are finally ready to tackle this bathroom once and for all! It is time for this bathroom to reach its full potential! And oh yeah, in the meantime, our teenage daughter is now an adult and lives at college. So the downstairs bedroom and bathroom now belong to our teenage son, and the pink just was not cutting it for him. He wanted it gone for good! We have done a lot in this room so far, but we still have a ways to go. We replaced the vanity ourselves, and we even added a quartz counter with an undermount sink. We DIY’ed all of this, which saved us a chunk of change. We painted the room a soothing grey (Grey Owl by Benjamin Moore), we changed out the fixtures for some that were much nicer and more modern. We DIY’ed some new and much better quality shelves that are heavy weight enough to store heavy things if needed. We are even hiring an electrician to add a really cool farmhouse light over the sink! I’m not sharing all of this today, because I have big plans to share it a little later this Spring, but I thought it would be fun to give you a few peeks of the progress we are making.
We are planning to install glass tiles on the wall behind the sink that go all the way to the ceiling, and that will be a dramatic effect! Right now the project is on hold because I am finishing up some other more pressing things, but I can’t wait to get back to work and really share more of it with you. But in the meantime, this bathroom is really really happy that we are finally showering it with the love it deserves! And Mr. 17 Year Old is feeling right at home in his new space, even though we still have work to do. Although it will still be a few months before we can call it done, I wanted to add some small touches that would make it feel good for him, and that is where The NEW Atmosphere Collection™ Fine Home Fragrance by Glade® comes in. Have you seen this new fragrance collection by Glade® yet? If not, take my word that you need to check these out! I found mine at my local Kroger store, and I wanted to buy all of them!
These new scents were created to compliment your home and decor. And they just fit right in with pretty much any decor. I love the labels on the candles, and the creamy color too. I can’t believe how high end they look and smell! This new line of products was curated and crafted with layered ingredients and scents by world renown fragrance designer Ann Gottlieb and they just make our bathroom renovation feel like home. There are four scents, and all come in both jar candles and PlugIns® Scented Oil. My two personal favorites, and are N°2 Bright™ and N°3 Free™! So fitting for the feeling I want to evoke in our son’s new bathroom! What better way for a 17 year old to feel other than bright and free!
I am so excited to get back to work on this bathroom renovation, and to share more of it with you! All in due time my friends. But until then, we are enjoying this bright, free new space just as it is! Even if we never touched another thing in this room, it has come a very long way. But, it still has more of a story to tell, and thankfully, it has me to make it come to life! I think we might just be made for each other! Ha!
If you like it, then you wanna put a pin on it!
