Daughter’s Bedroom Progress- Shelves & Curtains

Bedroom Progress- DIY Shelves, Drop Cloth Curtains

Hey friends!  I hope you had a fabulous weekend!  It was a fabulous weekend for us, I don’t know if you have seen me mention my son who runs track.  On Friday, his 4×800 relay team won the state championship in their event, and broke the school record as well, so that was exciting and amazing and all of that good stuff!  Stay tuned at the bottom of this post to see a picture of the championship team.  If you are new to my blog, welcome!  Today I want to share some progress we have made in my adult daughter Delaney’s bedroom.  I last shared this room with you back in February when we switched bedrooms between she and my 16 year old son.  We finally got around to hanging these DIY shelves for her to put things and some drop cloth curtains, and it just feels so much more like home in here for her now that she has places to display and store her personal belongings.

If you follow me on Instagram, I shared some sneak peeks of this space over the weekend.  These shelves were simple to make and install.  And this is not the first time we have made and hung shelves.  We made some for her bedroom at college as well.  You can see those and read all about them here.  since this is her bedroom at our home, she picked out the wood and the brackets that we used.  I am not 100% positive, but I do believe these are pine.  We bought the wood, the brackets, and all of the supplies for this project at Home Depot.  The pencil sketch over her bed is her, and it was drawn by a friend she was in high school with.  He actually entered it into some art shows.  Not sure if he won or not, but he gave this to her, and I had it framed as a gift.  I won’t let her take it to college with her, but one day I will let it go when she is finished with college.

Did you know that Home Depot will cut wood for you?  We made sure to measure before we went, so we knew how long we wanted these shelves to be.  After that it was as simple as choosing the wood she wanted and having them cut it to size.  She chose this particular piece of wood because of the variation in color that it contained.  She liked that and thought it added interest to the shelves, and I have to say I agree!  After I brought these home, I used my hand sander to sand them down really smooth.  I cleaned all of the dust off of them after sanding, and then I rubbed them down twice with tung oil.  when that was dry I buffed them with a clean cloth.  She didn’t want these to be stained.  she likes the natural simplicity of the wood.  The tung oil just conditions them and gives them a nice sheen.

I found the white storage crates you see on the top shelf at Target.  I love that they have lids, and white is the color she wanted.  But they do have other colors as well.  These boxes hold her art and craft supplies, and one of them contains greeting cards that she likes to save.  She has a really cool vintage camera collection, so it is nice to see some of them on display again.  She has a couple of others that are at her apartment.  I made sure that these shelves were hung far enough apart so that her TV would fit on the bottom shelf.  She has been without a TV in this room since February.  So she is happy to have it back.  Notice the framed drawing on the middle shelf.  My cousin, Jaime, drew that picture of her when she was just a toddler, and it has always been in her room.

I found this Hawaiian girl bust at an antique store in Thomas, WV back in March, and I was so drawn to it because I think it looks very similar to my daughter!  If you are curious as to what my daughter looks like, you can click on the About Nicki tab at the top of my blog and you will find family pictures there.  I knew when I came across this bust that it belonged in this bedroom, and I really love it in here!  The ballet shoes you see pictured were from a Nutcracker production I saw when she was a tiny girl, and they belonged to the woman who starred in the show.  They are autographed right on the toe.

The framed quote you see here is a free printable that I printed myself from Mountain View Cottage. This is from a children’s book that I read to my daughter every day as a small child, and she still owns the book.  Funny thing about this quote.  I actually wrote it out in my own handwriting and framed it in her bedroom when she was a baby.  She still has it in her bedroom at college!  So when I saw this much better version, I knew just where it belonged!  She might be 20 years old now, but she will always be my first and only baby girl.

The curtains are just drop cloths that I hung using curtain rings.  I like the color and texture of them, and they are too long right now.  but that’s not the only problem.  I bought these drop cloths at Lowes, and it so happens that the seam in them do not match.  On the curtain on the left, the seam runs horizontally, you can see it right in the middle.  The seam on the curtain on the right runs vertically.  I went ahead and hung them anyway since we had already hung the drapery rod, just to see what they look like.  But I am not happy with how they don’t match.  So my plan is to go and purchase one more drop cloth, and I am assuming that it will match one or the other of these?  Once I have two that match, my daughter may want to do something with them, like painting a pattern or something of that nature.  I told her she can do whatever she wants to.  I am thinking a stripe might be nice.  And they also need to be hemmed, which we will also do at that time.  I purchased the curtain rod at Target.

We also hung this mirror on the wall, it was just leaning before.  I painted this mirror originally and hung it over our fireplace, and you can read the details on how I painted the frame here.

One of the perks of being a blogger is that from time to time, I am offered free products to use in exchange for blogging about them.  And I was thrilled to have been offered all of the paint for both room transformations.  The paint I used is sold at Lowe’s, and it is from their HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams line of paint.   The colors we used for this room are Dorian Gray and White Gallery in a flat finish.

We also hung this map art.  This is special to us because it once belonged to LC’s brother, and I like it on this wall next to the mirror.  My daughter has plans to paint the blue vanity and the stool beneath it white.  She painted it blue for her old bedroom, and she feels like she wants this room to be neutral. You can read about the blue painted vanity here.

Let’s talk about this stool for a brief moment.  There was a stool that came with this vanity, and one of the legs kept breaking off of it, numerous times.  So we finally got rid of it, and her great uncle was kind enough to make this for her.  It is very sturdy and I love the way the seat curves.  She plans to paint it white as well.  I bet you the leg won’t break off of this stool!

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you might remember the hooks we hung on the wall in her old room for scarf storage.  We rehung them on the wall behind her door so that she can hang whatever she wants to hang on them.  They are actually curtain hold backs.  But they work great to use them as hooks.  They are large and in charge, and you can hang various things on them.    You just might notice my reflection in the mirror.  Funny glimpse into some of the positions I get in to get a shot of something!

And that about sums up the progress we have made in Delaney’s new bedroom.  We have to finish the curtains, and then I am thinking I would like to hang a pretty chandelier or something in the room. So I plan to be on the lookout for one at yard sales and thrift stores this summer.  After that, this room will be done!
And as promised, here is a picture of the AA state champion 4×800 relay team.  Mr. 16 year Old is second from the left.  They ran a great race and they had a great season, it was a joy to watch them run.  The entire boy’s team placed 3rd in the State Championship, and the girl’s won the whole thing! Congrats to all of them on a wonderful season!  And as for you, I hope you have a great week!  What do you think of this bedroom so far?  I would love to hear from you in the comments.  I read and respond to every one!

Congratulations to your son to won the state championship 🙂
I gathered a handful of my favorite coordinating pieces from around the house and styled it up. I like the way the colors work together to fun up this corner of the room.
