Today begins the winter $100 Room Challenge, and I’m throwing my hat in with my dining room/office refresh phase 2.
Happy New Year friends! Goodness, I have so much I could say about the second half of 2018, and how I’m feeling about a fresh new year. But that is for another post. Today, I’m here to throw my hat into the winter $100 Room Challenge, and you might be surprised to see that I will be working on our dining room/office. If you are a regular follower of the blog, you might be asking yourself, didn’t I do that just last winter? Well, you are not wrong! I did do a dining room/office refresh for the $100 room challenge just one year ago, but we all know $100 only goes so far, #amiright
I really was happy with how this space came out last year, and all that I was able to accomplish in just one month and for only $100, but I knew there was more work that could have been done. So this year, I decided to start off the year with a bang, and I’m going to do a phase 2 of our dining room/office refresh for the $100 room challenge again this year. And, I am kind of excited about it. Plus, December was a long and kind of depressing month, so it will be really good for me to focus on a project right now. You can click the link to see the dining room/office refresh reveal from last winter, and you will find links in that post to all four weeks of the challenge.
If you are new to the $100 Room Challenge you can read more about it here. But the basic premise for the challenge is this: you get one month, and $100, to completely makeover one space in your home. I know what you may be thinking… $100 is not a lot of money. Just wait. What you can do with $100 (and a little creativity) will absolutely blow your mind. And if you don’t believe me, just follow along, and click through and see what the other participants are doing for this challenge, and you will see so many great things happening with just a $100 budget. You can see the mudroom I made over for my first time participating in the $100 Room Challenge here.

Here is a before photo for you of what the room looked like before the makeover I completed last year. The room really did come so far on a $100 budget!
One of the major DIY projects I completed for last years $100 room challenge was this brick self adhesive wallpaper accent wall you see from below. You can read the full post about this wallpaper here. Well, it turned out to be a HUGE FAIL, and I had to end up removing it over the summer. You can see this shot below of the wallpaper from my reveal post. If I’m being entirely honest, I had to edit these photos to even get the wallpaper to look as good as it did in the photos. I really loved the wallpaper, it just would not adhere to the wall properly. I kept having to use a bid straight edge tool to try to smooth out bubbles and get the seams to stay down. It was becoming a daily chore. And one day I just couldn’t take it anymore, and I ripped it down. My husband wasn’t home at the time, and he came home to quite the mess.
Here is an unedited photo so that you can see the reality of the wallpaper situation. Up towards the top right corner of the photos you can see bubbling, and you can see the seems are not adhering well too. It was a complete nightmare that grew increasingly worse over the months.
I had left over paint from where I had painted the other three walls, so I just painted the fourth wall to match. It was a free and quick fix that only took me a few hours of work. And once I finished it, I asked myself why the heck I waited so long to fix the problem. Below is a photo from a Thanksgiving tablescape post I wrote that shows the wall painted.
My favorite project of the challenge last year was this buffet and matching mirror that I painted. And that will stay just like it currently is because I absolutely love the way it turned out. You can also see my DIY file cabinet makeover in the background here. I would love to be able to replace that with more of a furniture piece, but doubt that can fit into a $100 budget. Plus, I don’t think this room is going to be serving double duty as a home office for too much longer. So it will probably remain as is.
There are three major projects I will be doing in this room for phase two of my dining room/office refresh. And all of them involve paint. I will be making over my dining table and chairs, and then I will be painting the desk and shelves, and doing something fun on the top of the desk that will give it a whole new look. Their will be white and probably light grey involved. and I believe that by doing these three makeovers, this room will be completely transformed.
There will be one purchase I am looking to make for this challenge, and it will be a new rug. I am hoping I can find something for a steal, and I also hate to have to replace this rug. Unfortunately, it didn’t survive 2018. Our pug, Tyson, busted an ink pen all over and I wasn’t able to get the huge stain out. It is still in the room, but needs replaced. If I am unable to replace it within my budget, I plan on spinning it around to make the stain in a much less obvious area of the room.
I really don’t have any other changes planned for this space, other than to declutter and purge the desk area. I’m so excited to get to work on the table, and I’m still not 100% decided on what I’m going to do there, but I’ll be sharing my progress each Wednesday, and the big reveal of my dining room/office refresh will be on January 30. So I sure do hope you will follow along with my makeover journey, and I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments along the way!

Nicki I am so excited to see how you room evolves over the next five weeks. I hate that you wallpaper has bubbled, such a common issue with wallpaper, but at least it will be easier to remove with the air pockets.

Yes, the wallpaper totally sucked the life out of the room! I actually already removed it and painted that wall. So check that off the list, but I still have several things to paint in this room! Thanks so much!
Oh no, I hate that happened with your wallpaper- I loved that feature in your room! But it’s nice that you will be starting with a blank slate too. I absolutely loved how this room turned out with your last challenge and can’t wait to see what you do with it this time!

What a bummer that the wallpaper didn’t end up working… I feel like others have had similar problems with that type of wallpaper 🙁 Can’t wait to see how the table turns out, and fingers crossed for an awesome rug for cheap 🙂

I really enjoyed your last $100 challenge. I am so glad that you’re being honest about the wallpaper fail- such a shame it had to come down. Looking forward to seeing the table and chairs makeover. And what rug you find.
