DIY Book Page Wreath

DIY Bookpage Wreath12
Did you have a happy Valentine’s Day?  Mr. 7 year old and LC made sure I had a wonderful day.  We had a little bit of a snow storm here and I was really bummed that our date night almost got cancelled, but we decided to brave the storm and we went out for dinner and a movie anyway (Fifty Shades of Grey!)  I have spent three of the last six weeks without LC because he has been in Chicago training for his new job, so we really needed a date night!
So let’s chat about my new DIY book page wreath!  I am so excited to share it with you today, can you believe I made this for only 10 cents?!  Our local library was have a book sale, and I bought an old paper book book to use for a dime.  I chose the book I did because I liked the patina of the old pages.

Make your own book page wreath:

Did you see the post I wrote titled Five Valentines Mantles that Rock?  If not, you may want to go and check out the DIY heart book page wreath that Christina of the DIY Mommy made for her Valentines Mantle.  Her lovely heart wreath is what inspired me to make this book page wreath.  And you can go here to see a video she made with a full tutorial to make one of your very own!  I used her video tutorial to make mine, and it turned out exactly the way I wanted it to look.  All I needed was the book, poster board (which I had on hand), and a hot glue gun.

The only difference between hers and mine is I used a book with older looking pages, and mine is shaped in an oval.  I wanted to make this for a gallery wall that I am putting together in our living room, and it already has several circle and rectangle shapes, so I thought an oval would be a nice shape to include on my wall.  I used a piece of poster board to cut out an oval shape for this project.  I got my oval shape from this oval shaped chalkboard tray I made for Trashtastic Tuesday a while back.  I just took it down off of the wall and traced it onto a piece of poster board.  then I measured in about two inches in from the edge of the outside oval using a ruler, and made lines all the way around the oval, and connected the lines.  I cut out the outside and inside lines to make the form for my wreath.

Two tips I might add for you if you want to make one of your own:

#1- that in the video tutorial, she does two rows- one on the outside and one on the inside.  I did the same thing, but then I stood up and took a good look at the finished product from above.  I then filled in any empty spots with more book pages.  I wanted it to look full and lush.  And the reason mine had bare spots could have been because I cut my oval shape to be wider than her heart shape was.  This took me two evenings, working a couple of hours each time to complete.
#2- When I went to hang this on the wall it was pretty heavy on the poster board, so I used double sided foam tape and put some at four points on the back of the wreath.  I used a simple piece of jute string to tie it up and hang it from a nail, then I pressed the foam tape onto the wall at all four points, just to stabilize it and get it to hang flat on the wall because it was bowing out a little without the tape.

This DIY book page wreath was a great addition to the gallery wall I am creating!  I am considering adding a black and white plaid bow at the top of the wreath, what do you think? I am still not finished with the wall, and I think it will be a work in progress for quite a while, but I am thinking of showing you the whole thing where it is right now, so that post may come soon.

What do you think of this book page wreath trend?  Have you been seeing them around blog land, or is it just me who notices them a lot?  I am not sure how long this will last before it starts looking dirty and dusty, but for ten cents, I think it will last at least a year or two!  Have a great week!
