Hey friends! Last week, I shared my Fall front stoop all decorated for Halloween and Fall, and one of the items on my little stoop was something that I made myself. You may or may not have already seen have seen my DIY rustic pumpkin patch in that post, but today I wanted to share a tutorial for how I made it! It was a fairly straightforward and simple project that cost me practically no money, and I think it looks so cute on my Fall front stoop! So stick around with me today, and I’ll show you how i made it and share a few pictures of it that I never shared last week.
I shared this picture a few weeks ago on Instagram as I was just beginning this project. We tore down the fence in our back yard over the summer, and I saved a few sections of the fence for possible future projects, much to my husband’s dismay, ha!
Supplies You Will Need:
3 fence posts
3 paint sticks
Deco Art Outdoor Living paint in the color pumpkin patch
Americana Decor Creme Wax in Golden Brown
Small paint brush
Jute
As I mentioned above, I used rustic old salvaged fence posts. They were free, and I love how rustic and worn they are, but if you don’t have access to old fence posts, you can purchase fence posts like this at most hardware type stores. I particularly liked them for this project because they remind me of pumpkins at the top.
How to Make the Pumpkin Patch:
- I started by power washing my fence posts, but if you are using new ones, you won’t need to do this step. After I washed them, I let them dry for a couple of days.
- Next, you will want to decide how long you want each one of them to be. I eyeballed this. I did no measuring, I just knew I wanted each of them to be a different height, and I used a pencil to mark a line across each one where I wanted to cut it.
- I then used a miter saw to cut them to my desired height. You can use a hack saw if you don’t have a miter saw.
- After they were cut, I painted one side with the orange outdoor paint. I only used one coat because I wanted you to be able to still see the rustic look of the wood, and I loved the way they looked with only one coat.
- After the paint was dry, I needed something to use for the stems, and I decided to use paint sticks I have lying around. I used three of them, so that the tops would all be shaped the same. I used the same method to cut these- all three the same length.
- I gave them a coat of dark wax and wiped the excess off with a paper towel, and they were dry pretty much immediately.
- I then attached them to the top using my staple gun. I arranged them to be tilted in different directions.
- I needed something to hold the three pumpkins together, and I decided to use the leftover parts of the three paint sticks to attach them in the back. You can see below how I used a staple gun to attach them.
- Lastly, I tied some jute around the top of each stem, and that was it! They were done!
I just think they look so adorable out on my front stoop leaned up on top of the hay bail! These DIY rustic pumpkins will probably be sticking around with me through several Autumns.
Everything I used for this project were things I already had, so I really didn’t spend an money to put it together. I had purchased the paint for my DIY mini crate pumpkin, and I had more than enough left over to do this project as well. I still have plenty left over for something else too!
