DIY Wall Art- Cover a Photo Mat With Craft Paper

I purchased this frame at Ikea a few months ago, and I decided to print out a map of our hometown to put in it. I like the color blue of the map that I found on the city website, and thought it would be a fun personal way to add some wall art to my stairway.So I printed it out and framed it. But after I hung it on the wall, and took pictures of it, it was just plain boring.

It was just kind of blah…

So, I decided to spice it up with some craft paper that I already had. I chose a few different pieces that I though went with the colors I already have going on in this area, and just used trial and error until I liked the way it looked. It already had a white mat, so I just used double sided tape to tape the pieces where I wanted them. This is what I ended up with.

I also added a little mirror to bounce some light around. I bought this mirror at Goodwill and spray painted it grey.

What a nice little pop of color it gave to my stairwell!

I like the way it looks with my Horseshoe art and my area rug in the hallway below.

I think this is a creative and cheap way to add a little pizzaz to something that is looking a little drab.

What do you think? I need to paint this entire stairwell, but it is a big job with very high ceilings. And I am afraid of heights! But it will look so much better when it is painted the same color as my downstairs hallway.
