Fall Fashion Guide for the Over 40 Woman

September 19, 2015 By Nicki 1 Comment

Fashion is one of my favorite things, as you may know, and I love when seasons change because I get to change my wardrobe.  In the past few years I have become much more focused when it comes to my wardrobe.  I try to purchase staple items that can be mixed and matched, and classic items that will last for years to come.  Maybe the fact that I am over 40 has something to do with it?  I guess getting old just does that to a woman, I am much more interested in practicality, and stretching my money as far as I can when it comes to my wardrobe.

Every season I take to the internet before the season gets started, and I do my research about what is on trend for the season for women my age, and I love to share it with you!  So if you are a woman 40 or over, this is your one stop post for everything you want to know when it comes to Fall shopping!  I’ve already done all the work for you, so you can just read this post, and shop, easy peasy!  And even if you are not over 40, I have a feeling you will still like some of this stuff!  My 19 year old daughter and I interchange a lot of things in our wardrobes!  So don’t count yourself out!Ready to get stylish this Fall?  Let’s go!  In each category, I have given you both a high end and a low end option of each item, hence the “high” and “low” you will be seeing below.

High Waisted Flare Leg Jeans

Yep!  You read that right!  Flared jeans are making a comeback, and I am praising the good Lord!  I never stopped liking them for a second, and I kept pretty much all of mine!  So I am doing a happy dance this Fall.  But the even better part is that the flared jeans of today are high waisted!  Hallelujah!  Those low waisted flared jeans from the 1990’s that I always thought were the most uncomfortable things on the planet are things of the past, and I am so glad, can I get an amen?  High wasted and flared are wear it’s at ladies, go get some!  Or better yet, pull your old ones out of the attic, or the back of your closet if you still have them.  This is not to say that skinny jeans are goners, because they are sticking around for a while I am guessing, but let’s face it, some people just don’t look good in skinny jeans, and some people just don’t like them, so now they have another option.  I personally like both, and am happy to wear both.

Wear it With:  a button down, a blazer, a flowy top, a vest, a kimono, or something structured.  There are so many options people!  Be careful about the length of your flare jeans too.  You may need different lengths for different heel heights.  Your jeans should be long enough that they cover most of your shoes (just the toe peeking out, without actually touching the floor.  As for what shoes to wear with a flared jean, the sky is the limit, really!  You can wear any type of heels, wedges, stilettos, platforms, or you can wear flats or sneakers.  Just remember you may need a longer length of flare jeans for the heels and a shorter length for the flat shoes.

Try this more expensive pair (high), or this less expensive option (low)

Plaid

plaid-for-fall
Plaid is so hot right now, in both fashion and home décor.  Flannel and plaid shirts and scarves are two things I cannot get enough of!  I just bought this one a black, white and grey.  They are out of the color I bought, but the purple is too cute too!  I have also seen some awesome plaid jackets and coats.  Even sneakers look great in plaid!  I must have all the plaid!
Wear it With:  Plaid is more versatile than some people may think.  I think you can wear plaid with stripes, as seen above (love that look!) or it also looks cute with florals in a similar color palette.  Plaid looks great with jeans and black leggings.  You can wear plaid or flannel shirts that are more fitted for a tailored look, or big and loose and unbuttoned with a shirt underneath.  It also looks cute layered under a denim jacket or vest or a military jacket or vest.  Plaid shirts also look super cute peaking out from under a sweater or cardigan.  There are just so many ways of wearing a plaid shirt I can’t name them all.  If you need more ideas, search plaid shirt outfit ideas on Pinterest!  Plaid scarves are also huge right now, and you can wear them with so many different things, I love them!  You can even wrap a blanket scarf around you like a jacket or a poncho and finish it off with a cute belt and leggings.  Or just wrap it around your neck in a myriad of different ways and feel oh so cozy on a cool Fall day.

Fringe

Are those fringe Hunter boots above to die for or what??  Fringe is on trend for Fall this year, and I need some!  I bought an awesome fringe bag in the spring, and it is still great for fall.  I have been noticing fringe more and more on boots, bags, jackets, scarves, sweaters, dresses, and skirts.  This is one thing that I think is better in small doses, you don’t want your entire outfit to be fringe, but to add it in one or maybe two small places?  It rocks!
Wear it With:  As I said above, it is probably better to wear fringe in moderation, at least that is my opinion (for what its worth)  Head to toe fringe may become a bit too much, but if you can keep it to one item at a time, you will be rocking this on trend ingredient this Fall.  I personally love a fringe bag the most, and think it is the most versatile of all fringe items, but I also love it on a boot and think it is versatile as well.  I would kill for those hunter boots, but they are way out of my budget!  My daughter bought a vintage navy suede vest that is covered in fringe, and it is going to look awesome for Fall.  So the key is to be strategic about how you wear it, because it can start to look trashy if you go overboard.

Try these jackets:  high option, low option
Try these ponchos:  high option, low option
Try these skirts:  high option, low optionDenim on Denim

denim-on-denim
Denim on denim used to be a huge no no, but not this Fall!  This Fall it’s OK to mix it.  It looks best when you vary the shade of denim, but I have seen both denims worn in the same shade in a stylish way as well.  I haven’t styled an outfit like this yet, but it’s on my list!
Wear It With: You can style an outfit like this is a boho way, in a structured and preppy way, in a layered way, in pretty much any way you please! Wear it with nude pumps or other nude shoes, with booties or tall boots, with fun sneakers, or with sandals.  With dainty jewelry or with loads of it. Make this one your own!  Also, try it with skirts!  I have always been a fan of the denim skirt, and I am on the lookout for a trendy new one.  But one thing is fur sure, you should give this one a try.

The Duster

duster-vest-for-fall
The duster vest is so chic right now!  It not only hides a wealth of evils, but it looks sexy at the same time.  Or, it can look cool and casual, depending on how you style it.  The outfit above is sexy and chic, don’t you think?  This vest is perfect for cool fall days when there is still a warm breeze.  Not a fan of wearing something this long?  Have no fear, they come in shorter lengths too!  And even better, some have sleeves and some do not!
Wear it With:  I have seen a duster decked out with a structured pant and on the boho side, and both rock it out in a serious way.  It looks great styled casually with jeans, and with skirts and dresses. And a myriad of shoes of any type to your liking will look great with a duster.  And when I say duster, that can mean a sleeveless trench as pictured above, or a long drapey sweater.
Try this long one: High option, low option
Try this shorter one:  High option, low option
Try these sweater versions: High option, low option low option
With Sleeves:  High option, low option
A Great Boot

Take note!  The boots pictured above are absolute perfection!  Seriously people, I don’t know if there are any other boots I’d rather own than this pair.  Boots will last for several seasons if they are well made, quality pair of boots.  And if you ask me, they are worth an investment, because you will wear them so many times they will pay for themselves over the years.  High boots, low boots, booties, ankle boots, rain boots- however you want to describe them is fine, just wear them!  Wearing boots is one of my favorite things about Fall, how about you?
Wear it With:  You can wear boots with almost anything.  The question is, what can’t you wear boots with?  Let me count the ways.  They can be worn with jeans, leggings, skirts, dresses, slacks, shorts.  Heck, you can even wear them with a wedding dress!
Tall boots:  High option, low option
Short boots:  High option, low option
Booties:  High option, low option
Rain Boots: High option, low option
Faux Fur

I am not sure you could add anything more cozy to your wardrobe this Fall than faux fur.  and I am not opposed to real fur either, if it’s vintage.  Warm and cozy is the name of the game here.  I just bought a faux fur scarf that looks like this for a steal at Gabriel Brothers, today, and I can’t wait to style it with something! Jackets, coats, vests, and scarfs all have a plethora of options in fur, and I don’t think you can go wrong if you add a piece to your wardrobe this Fall!
Wear it With:  This is another thing that looks great with jeans of all kinds!  But I also think it would look great with many other things you already own.  I can be paired with pretty much any Fall outfit.  Just take to Pinterest for ideas on how you can style it, that’s what I did!
Vests:  High option, low option
Jackets:  High option, low option
Coats: High option, low option
Scarves:  High option, low option
Slip on Sneakers

snakeskin-sneakers
Slip on sneakers are something that can be worn in every season, and they made my list for spring as well.  But they are equally as wearable during the Fall season.  I bought a really cute leopard print pair at Gabriel Brothers in the Spring, and I will be wearing them all of Fall, and can’t wait to style them with outfits.  You can go wrong with a pair of slip on sneakers!
Wear it With:  These go great with jeans, joggers, leggings, and even some dresses and skirts.  I feel like they are even great to wear to work if you work in a casual environment like I do.  I love them with black pants as well.
Try these:  High end, low end low end
You will be stylin’ and profilin’ if you add some of these things to your wardrobe this fall.  Are you dying to go shopping now as much as I am?  I have money that is just burning a hole in my pocket, and I plan to try to be super budget savvy with my Fall shopping.  Stay tuned to my weekly style posts, because my Fall wardrobe is going to be kicking into full swing and I can’t wait to show off whatever I end up purchasing!  Do you have any favorite items from this post today?  I would love for you to tell me what they are in the comments!  I have created a Pinterest Board titled Fall Fashion Ideas for 2015, so hurry, go follow it!
