Fashion Tips- Mixing The Old With The New

August 19, 2016 By Nicki Leave a Comment

Hey friends!  My fashion posts have been few and far between this summer, and I apologize for that (if you are a fan).  For some reason lately, I just feel like I am struggling to keep up with everything- life, starting back to work, summer fun, and blogging.  Maybe the fact that I have now begun a new school year is actually a good thing because I am starting to get back into a routine.  So I hope to be churning my fashion posts back out on a regular basis.  Today, I wanted to share a little about how I make my wardrobe work for me.  As I have said here before many times, not everything in my closet is brand new.  I keep my clothes for a long time (sometime too long, I admit).  But I try to keep a balance of both old and new items and mix and match them in a way that hopefully keeps my wardrobe looking up to date.  And I think I do a pretty good job at it, so I wanted to share a little about that with you today while bringing you some of what I have been wearing in the past couple of weeks.  Yes, I’m still taking pictures of my outfits even though I don’t post about them as often lately!

I love to blog about fashion, and I see so many fashion bloggers wearing the newest and most trendy things on the market, and if that is there thing, they are rocking it!  I’m not cutting on them in any way because I love to read it just as much as the next person.  And I love to go shopping for each new season.  I do buy new items for my wardrobe often, but I stick to a budget I set for myself.  It saves my marriage you guys! Having all new all of the time is simply not who I am, and I pride myself on making my wardrobe work for me without buying a whole new one each season, so I am going to stick to what I know best, and hopefully if you are feeling the same way, you can be inspired by my perspective on things!  I do include affiliate links in my outfit posts.  If what I am wearing is not brand new, I try to find things that are similar to link to, just in case you are picking up what I am putting down, and you want to find something like what I am wearing to purchase.  So just know, that is why I add links that are similar, because what I am wearing is often not currently for sale in stores. Lets start with this outfit pictured below, for example.

The dress was given to me by a friend at work (she gives me things on the regular), and it still had the price tag on it!  It is a classic cream colored shift dress, and something that I think never goes out of style, so I was very happy to acquire this particular item!  I don’t think it looks old or outdated.  I paired it with this kimono that I bought brand new last summer, and a pair of cream colored wedges, also purchased last summer, and I think it looks fresh and stylish!  I don’t think that I look dated at all!  But I do want to add a quick note that I also love adding vintage items to my wardrobe on the regular, so I also don’t mind to look dated I guess, but I also try to do that in a fresh new way as well.  You can read more about my love of vintage and thrifted clothing here.

For this casual summer outfit, I am wearing a new denim skirt that I just purchased in the Spring, and I paired it with a striped tank that I purchased last summer, and a pair of sandals that I purchased a couple of years ago.  But good news, If you love these sandals as much as I do, they are still for sale! This denim skirt is a classic item that I will be wearing for years to come.  And the shirt is a favorite of mine, I also have it in charcoal gray.  I don’t often buy the same thing in more than one color, but I loved this shirt that much.  So when it went on clearance I purchased another color.

The bracelet you see below was made by someone who works as a school nurse in my county, and it is a vintage spoon.  I absolutely love it and have been wearing it for years!  If you are local and would like to purchase one, I can hook you up with a contact.  She will use a spoon you have also.

You guys, I can’t even tell you how many years I have owned this dress!  I purchased it at The Gap many years ago, but it is still one of my favorite sun dresses.  I love the color-red is my fave!  And I love the flowy loose fit.  There is not a day that goes by when I don’t want to put this on!  The galdiator type sandals are on the newer side, I purchased them last summer, and I like the mix of the sandals and the dress.

I always get compliments on this necklace, and you might be surprised to find out that it actually once belonged to my husbands grandmother!  When she passed I had the opportunity to choose some things of hers, and this necklace called my name.

This casual outfit is mostly old, except for the sandals, I bought them this Spring.  I have had the top for about four years, and the denim shorts for just as long.  But they are my very favorite denim shorts and I love the way they fit and the length, so they are not going anywhere!  And denim shorts are always in style right?  I really like the mix of this dressy top and the denim shorts.

The rose colored watch was a gift from LC last summer, and I wear it a lot.  I have been really into trying to mix my metals in jewelry just as I like to mix them in my decor.  I think that the rules for mixing metals is no more!  When mixing metals, I try to have at least two of each type of metal that I am wearing at a given time.  If you notice below, the watch is rose gold and the bracelet is a mixture of silver, gold, and rose gold.  And then the necklace is gold, but it is on a rose looking ribbon.  And you can’t see it here, but my ring is rose gold with a cubic zirconia stone, which I interpret as silver.

And there you have it!  That is a little about how I try to mix old and new in my daily outfits!  I hope you found some inspiration here today!  How do you feel about mixing old and new items in your wardrobe?  Do you keep your clothes for years like I do, or do you like to buy all new each season?  I would love to know your thoughts in the comments section!  I love your comments and read every single one!  I hope you have a lovely weekend!  Tomorrow kicks off cross country season for my son, so we are going to be super busy with that, and I will be of course sharing some of my favorite moments with you!  PS- I have not added in affiliate links to this post yet, but I will be updating this post tonight with links to similar and the exact items for each outfit.  So if you are looking or that, come back later this evening! For your convenience, this post contains affiliate links.  If you click on them and purchase an item, I will receive a small percentage of commission.  By clicking the link, you are NOT paying any more than you  ordinarily would, and you are helping support me in keeping this blog up and running.
