Today I am throwing my hat into the $100 Room Challenge by sharing my plans for a guest bedroom makeover on a budget of $100.
Hey friends! Happy New Year! It’s a brand new year and a brand new decade, and I am so excited for it. How are you feeling about the new year? During the past decade we have had so many wonderful experiences, along with massive heartbreaks and challenges. As you may know, we moved to Austin, Texas back in July, so we are thrilled to ring in the new year and a new decade that will be spent here in Texas. We have only begun to put down roots here and I am looking forward to meeting new people, starting to make some new friends, and making our new house a home here. I am starting the new year by joining the $100 Room Challenge and a guest bedroom makeover.
Let me start by thanking Erin over at Lemons, Lavender, and Laundry for being our lovely host, and this whole challenge was her brain child. If you are new to the $100 Room Challenge you can read more about it here. But the basic premise for the challenge is this: you get one month, and $100, to completely makeover one space in your home. I know what you may be thinking… $100 is not a lot of money. Just wait. What you can do with $100 (and a little creativity) will absolutely blow your mind. And if you don’t believe me, just follow along, and click through and see what the other participants are doing for this challenge, and you will see so many great things happening with just a $100 budget.
This is my third time joining this challenge. You can click each of these links to visit my previous $100 room reveals.

As you can see above, I have made a design board to give you an idea of my plans for this space. I will go into some more detail about my plans during this post, but for now, let me share the before photos of this room. I have to say, this room is in the worst shape of any room I have taken on for this challenge. But I feel that I can make a pretty big impact with only $100, and using some things we already have. I am really excited to make a welcoming space for guests. Because we have relocated here, we have a lot fo friends and family who will be visiting over the years, so it is very important to us to have a welcoming and comfortable space for them.
In case you don’t know, for blogging purposes we have named our new home the yellow prairie house, and we have so many things we want to do to make this house a home. When we bought this house, this room was actually being used as a home office. There was built in shelving and cabinetry along two walls. Hence, the reason for the two different paint colors in this room. We actually downsized from a 4 bedroom to a 3 bedroom home, and we did not need a home office as much as we need a guest bedroom. So one of the first things we did upon moving in was to have all of the built ins removed. We actually liked them, so we had them relocated to our bonus room area back in August. I am embarrassed to admit that we have actually hosted 3-4 different people who have slept in this room in the state it is currently in. We were a little busy with a kitchen renovation and other things around here that took priority.
This bedroom set was handmade by Amish people in Sugar Creek, Ohio for my daughter back when she was around 3 years old. And we will actually be giving it to her whenever she decides she wants it. But for now, we are using it for our guest room. Her father, who passed away last year, bought this for her, so it is very sentimental, and we will not be altering it in any way. You can see that there is a scratch on the headboard, which I will be trying to repair during this challenge.
This is also the room where I plan on allowing my husband to display some of his collections and medals from races he has run, so I plan to add some shelving from our old kitchen in here for him to display some things. However, I don’t plan to style this room for photos with these items, so that will come after the big reveal. I also need to add some place for him to hang all of his baseball caps so they aren’t just sitting on the dresser.
MY husband uses this closet in the guest room. He very generously gave me the huge walk in closet in our master bedroom all to myself. So he comes in here to change, and he uses the dresser for his clothing as well. I do have plans to paint the closet door and the entry door in a dark charcoal.
I plan on keeping it fairly simple in here. The walls will be white- the color I have chosen is called bistro white by Valspar. I thought that the tone of the wood furniture would pop against all white walls. The trim will also get a fresh coat of white paint. We love the hardwood flooring in this room, which is a very dark brown. I don’t currently have an area rug for this space, so I think I am going to be shuffling some rugs around so that I can use a rug that we already have in this space.
Along with the walls being white, I plan to go with white bedding and white curtains. I am also planning a way to update the ceiling light for free, so stay tuned for that! There is one other little DIY project I have planned for this space, and that is to make over a trunk that I have had since high school and add it right at the foot of the bed. I have added a photo of a similar trunk below. I am going to be painting the trunk with white chalk paint and adding some feet to raise it up a couple of inches.
I will be sharing my progress on this guest bedroom makeover every Wednesday throughout the month of January, with the final reveal on January 29. so be sure to check back next week because I will have some paint up on the walls and that is going to make the room look so different! To wrap things up let me share a little to do list with of you what I need to accomplish in this makeover.
To Do List for Guest Bedroom Makeover:
paint walls
paint baseboards and trim
hang curtains
hang shelves
add a rug from another room
make over vintage trunk

The first thing I thought was how much I love the bed. Such a special memory she will always have. I can totally see this guest room as you have described. The natural woods with the white walls…it’s going to be beautiful. Can’t wait to see how your husband’s mementos add to the room.
Thanks so much Kelli! I am glad you can see it too! I do plan on incorporating my husband’s things into the room, but probably not for the styled reveal. We’ll see as things move along how much I can use tastefully!
This room is going to be amazing when you’re done with it! Love your plans for white with the dark doors. So happy to have you joining for another round.
I’m so happy to be joining the challenge again, and boy do I have so many spaces in my home that need some work, so thank you for inspiring so many people to do what we can!
