Hallway Update- Black Door

June 23, 2014 By Nicki Leave a Comment

Happy Monday friends!  Over the weekend, I was back in my downstairs hallway working again.  It has been 8 months since I have made any progress in this small area of our home.  But now that Our Swedish Daughter is back home in Sweden, and I am on summer break, it was time to get back to work!  I have been wanting to do it for a long time, and I finally got around to painting the door that leads to our garage black!

This is a shot of the hallway taken while standing in my daughter’s bathroom.  The doors to the right house my laundry closet.  I am considering painting the closet doors with chalkboard paint and making them a fun spot to decorate or draw on.  What do you think of that idea?  The Drum shade ceiling light was the last project I completed in this space.  I worked on this hallway a lot last summer.  The first thing I did was the brown paper floor.  I plan to do a post soon to show you exactly how the floors are holding up after a year.

In case you haven’t seen it before, this is a picture of the door before I painted it.

The doorway to the right is our family room.  We had converted it to a bedroom for our Swedish exchange student while she was here, and I also got that room back to a family room over the weekend.  I will show you that soon as well.  The artwork on the wall in between the laundry and family room was a Trashtastic Tuesday project I completed a while back.

The yellow and gray print next to the black door is simply a shoe box lid wrapped with wrapping paper.  It was featured on Rain on a Tin Roof, which I was very excited about!

As I did with my black kitchen door, I also removed the door knob and spray painted it brushed nickel, using Rustoleum brushed nickel spray paint.  The one in my kitchen has held up great for over a year, and is finally starting to show a little wear and tear, so I am going to remove it and freshen it up with a couple more coats.  But even with the wear and tear, it sure beats the price of a new door knob!  I decided to go with brushed nickel because the newest door in our house, our front door, is brushed nickel, and I eventually want all of our door knobs to match.

And just in case this is your first rodeo at Sweet Parrish Place, Here are a couple of shots of the other side of the hallway.  You might remember when I made over this yellow shelf on the wall.  You can see to the right is my daughter’s bathroom, which I have been updating as well.

The collage frame hanging over it was hanging on the wall without pictures for almost a year, and I finally got around to getting some pictures of our family vacation last summer actually printed. The picture makes the frame look neon yellow, and trust me when I say it is not!  It is bright, but it is not fluorescent!

This is the mud room area, I guess you could say.  You may also remember when I used a body pillow to make a bench cushion for this bench.

You walk right up the stairs from this hallway and there is our front door.  I have done a lot of work on our entry as well, but there is still more to be done.  The gallery wall you see here was featured on Blissfully Ever After blog!  Again, super exciting!  You can see that I painted my front door black too.  I eventually want every door in our home to be black, but that takes time.  So far, I have three down, and who knows how many to go!

And because everyone loves a good side by side before and after photo, here it is!

I have to say, deciding to paint my doors black has been one of the best decisions!  They hide all of the dirt and the ugly!  I highly recommend them!  I love the richness they give to a room.  And believe it or not, they actually make the space feel more open.  Especially at night, they just seem to disappear into the dark, which definitely makes the space seem bigger, in my opinion.  What is your opinion on the black door craze?  Have you painted any doors black?Paint Color:  Behr Premium Plus satin enamel in the color Broadway.
