Haven Swag Challenge – DIY Mini Crate Pumpkin

Hey friends!  Today’s post evokes happy memories of time spent at the Haven Conference in August because I am taking part in a challenge with several other very talented bloggers called the Haven Swag Challenge.  We were tasked with the challenge of using the swag we received at Haven to create something, and we earn extra points if we use more than one item.  My creation is this sweet little DIY mini crate pumpkin, and although I admittedly chose this to make because I was pressed for time, I actually kind of fell for my little pumpkin!

We received so many fun things at Haven- swag out the wazoo I tell ya!  One of my favorite items we received was a dremmel, and I had visions dancing in my head of using mine to cut a wine bottle and make something really cool, but I just ran out of time and I had to face facts- that wasn’t going to happen so I started staring at my loot, and this mini wood crate was staring me right in the face.  I had Fall decor on the brain, and all of the sudden it came to me that I could make this tiny wood crate into a pumpkin!  I of course forgot to take a picture of the crate before I painted it orange, but I think you can get the jist.

I used Americana Decor satin acrylic paint in the color pumpkin patch with Americana Decor creme wax in golden brown over it.  I used the Americana decor 2 in. flat paint brush to apply the wax, which was also in my swag bag. I only used one coat of the paint on my crate.  I painted all four sides and the bottom.  After it was thoroughly dry, I painted on one coat of the dark wax, one wood panel at a time, and immediately wiped it off with a rag.  I really like the result!  It almost looks like a stain because you can still see the natural wood, but at the same time it is a deep and rich color on the pumpkin.

It didn’t take me long to realize that I could use a cork as my pumpkin stem!  I picked this cute little one from my stash, and it has little arrows on it.  I used the same dark wax and gave the cork a couple of coats, wiping each coat with a paper towel after.  I glued it on top and voila!  The sweetest little pumpkin!

I’ll leave you with a few more shots I took of my little DIY mini wood crate pumpkin.  I took these pictures in the evening, and I just love the way the light was filtering in through the trees.
