Master Bath Progress- New Paint Color

November 14, 2015 By Nicki Leave a Comment

Painted master bathroom- gray owl
Hey all!  I am so happy to be able to finally show you some progress we have made in our master bathroom. We finally painted!  We chose the same color we recently used to paint in our living room, Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore.  We had the color matched in Glidden paint in eggshell.  This was a difficult room to paint, because the ceilings are so high, which is why we have waited so long to paint.  Thanks to the help of Purdy, who supplied some very helpful products to us, we are finally able to get this room painted.  You can read more about my DIY toilet paper holder here, best toilet paper holder I have ever owned!

I found this giant heart on a recent trip to Hobby Lobby.  Believe it or not, I had never been to a Hobby Lobby before.  We don’t have one in our town, but when we travelled to Barboursville, WV for the State Cross Country Championship, there was one right near our hotel, so I had a chance to go, and I loved it!  Unfortunately, I can’t find this heart online to give you a link to it, but they do have it in the store.

In the picture below, you can see the old wall color, which was a cucumber green.  We still have not painted the shower area, because the wall needs some repairs, so that is the next thing we plan to do. The room looks so different without the green tint on everything from the old paint color.  The black cabinet no longer goes with what I have happening in the room right now, but it is the perfect size for the space, and it is much needed storage, so I have plans to paint it eventually.  And the blue tray on top of the cabinet is going to get a makeover too.  We also caulked and painted the trim in the same color I have used on all of the trim in this house- Glidden’s crisp linen white in semi-gloss.

I made the hand towel holder below recently, and you can read all about it here.  It was such a simple thing to make, and has a big impact in the space.

We also changed out the light fixture over the sink not long ago.  I went with a fairly standard brushed nickel light fixture.  You can find the light fixture at Home Depot.  We also updated the sink and counter top and painted the cabinet over a year ago.  The backsplash are over the counter top was all torn up looking for over a year, and it is so great to finally have it patched and painted.  But we have plans to install a white subway tile backsplash that goes up the whole wall.  I also plan to frame out the mirror.  We did change out the brackets that hold the mirror up when we painted, because the old ones were dirty, and had paint all over them from whomever had painted in the past.  They are so much cleaner looking now.  It’s the little details that can make all the difference in a room looking clean and finished.

One of my favorite additions to this space is the wooden crates that we hung on the wall as shelves.  I found these at HomeGoods last summer, and they have been lying around for months waiting to be hung.  I will write another post at some point to show you how we hung these on the wall.  I am so happy to have these hung because it provided much needed storage in the bathroom.  The curtain was a thrift store find a couple of summers ago.  It adds the perfect touch in this room.  It is too long, so I knotted it to shorten it, but I think I am going to cut it and hem it to fit.  What do you think?

The mirror with the hooks has always been in this room, but we moved it over to this wall when we painted.  It used to be on the wall that now holds the giant heart.  None of the windows in this house have trim around them.  That is something I am hoping to change int he future.

My favorite thing about these crates is the wire backing.  such a pretty detail when they are hanging on the wall.  The frame that is propped up on the bottom crate is also a new purchase from Home Depot, and as you can see, I have yet to fill it.  I am probably going to put some type of graphic art in it instead of a picture.  I like the pop of distressed blue it adds to the space.

As I mentioned earlier, I was contacted by a Purdy representative after attending the Haven Conference last summer, and they offered me some paint supplies.  When I received this extension pole, I was giddy.  It extends from 4-8 feet, and it was a life saver for us when it came to getting this room finished.  I am so thankful to them for providing this pole, some awesome Purdy Nylox paintbrushes and White Dove rollers.  I so wish that we had had this extension pole when we painted our stairwell and our living room.  It made the job go so much faster!  You can even purchase a tool that screws onto the pole that will hold a paintbrush, and that is how we trimmed out around the ceiling of this room.  It was awesome!

This little 1 1/2 inch Purdy Nylox Brush is my new favorite thing to use when it comes to cutting out.  It made things so easy!  I will forever be using this paint brush!

We are finally able to see the light at the end of the tunnel in our master bathroom, and it feels so good!  I am loving the way it is coming together.  We plan to install a subway tile backsplash over the sink, and we are also going to install it above our shower and bathtub.  The paint is is very bad shape above the shower, and it is peeling off badly.  So it is going to need to be scraped and patched before we can proceed.  Luckily, I won’t have to finish out the drywall perfectly, because I am going to cover a few feet above the shower with tile.  That way, we won’t have to worry about the drywall or paint getting wet anymore.  If it were in the budget, we would completely tear out the shower and replace it and enlarge it.  But that isn’t going to happen, so we are going to make the most of what we have for now.  I have never installed ceramic tile before, so this will be a learnign experience for me. Wish me luck!
Thanks for stopping by today, and I would love to know what you think of our master bathroom makeover so far.  I have more of the room to show you, but I decided to wait to show you the rest in the big reveal!  I hope you will stick around to see it!  Have a great weekend!
As promised, here are some of my favorite lights from Parrot Uncle:
