Learn how to make a Modern White DIY poster frame for cheap!
Hey friends! I have a cheap, quick, and easy DIY project to share with you today. and when you can add beautiful and trendy decor to your home on the cheap, it’s always a good day, right? Well, at least for me it is. Today I want to share a tutorial for how to make a modern white DIY poster frame. And I just love the way this project turned out.
I received this Morgantown, WV street poster free for review from the cutest little website called Modern Map Art. And I just happened to love it so much that I wanted to make a frame for it. I don’t know how many of my readers know that I live in West Virginia, and my daughter is a senior at West Virginia University. So this Morgantown map is going to look so cool hanging in her apartment in Morgantown! I can just picture it now. She will be the envy of all of her fellow WVU students who will want to know where she got it. This was such a cheap and simple project. Let me show you how I did it.

How to make a modern white DIY poster frame:
Supplies you will need:
1- 1/4 inch x 4 inch poplar board, painted white
saw to cut board ( I used this miter saw, but any saw will work)
white paint of your choice
adhesive (I used Loctite All Purpose Adhesive)
poster of your choice (this is the poster I used)
beads or accessories to add if you want to ( I used copper beads and a feather pendant)
What to do:
Since I was making this poster for my daughter’s apartment, I decided to go with a modern white DIY poster frame because I know that fits with her design aesthetic. I have 5,980,040 pieces of scrap wood in my garage. If you don’t believe me, ask my husband, ha! Anyway, I wanted to use up some of that wood, and I had this poplar board left over from when I made over our mudroom in the spring for the $100 room challenge. It was already painted white, so I didn’t even have to paint it! Yay! It was also free so double yay! So , this is what you do:
- measure your boards to the exact width of the poster you are framing
- cut your boards- you will need one for the top and one for the bottom
- turn your poster face down
- run a thin line of adhesive across the top of one of the boards, and then glue it to the top edge of your poster
- repeat the step above on the bottom edge of your poster
- sit something heavy on each board, and wait for the glue to dry. (It’s kind of like watching paint dry- fun!)
- cut a piece of jute twine to use to hang the poster from
- string your beads onto the jute at each end (if you have decided to use beads). I also added the feather pendant to one side of my beads.
- hot glue the twine to the back of the top board so that you can hang the poster
It really is so simple and doesn’t take long at all! Below are a few pictures I took during the process of making the frame.
The only problem I ran into during the making of this modern white DIY poster frame was after I hot glued the twine with my beads and feather onto it. When I turned it around to check out how it looked, the feather wouldn’t lay the way I wanted it to at the top of the frame. I easily fixed it by taking a dab of hot glue and placing it right on the top edge of the frame, and then gluing a little loop in the twine at the top. That solved the problem, and hopefully you can get the idea of what I mean from this picture below.
The bottom board is heavy enough that it weighs down the poster and makes it hang nicely. I love the clean lines and the black and white, and this poster is really very well made. It is a heavy weight paper, and it also comes in gold and blue.
