My Plaid Inspired Christmas Tree

Hey all!  Today I am really excited to share with you our Plaid Christmas Tree!  And can I just say, wow!  The Christmas Season has blown up and is in full swing in blog land!  Have any of you been enjoying all of the spectacular Christmas home tours around the interweb?  I have had quite a busy week, but I have snuck in some time here and there to check many of them out, and there is just so much inspiration.  I can’t wait to have time to look at more of them.  I wish that I were a more organized, good little blogger who had it all together and had my house completely decked out for Christmas already so I could share all of the Christmas loveliness already, but I am still not finished.  I need to start the week before Thanksgiving next year, I think, so that I won’t feel so behind next year.Click the following links to see the rest of my Christmas home tour.  Christmas living room  R

But I have to remind myself that in real life, I am not the only one who doesn’t have it all together already.  I need to allow myself permission to get my decorating done at my own pace and not put so much pressure on myself.  I am happy to say that as of right now, my living room and my stairwell are pretty much finished, but I still need to finish my dining room, kitchen, and family room.  I still have boxes that need to be taken back to the attic, and several things to do.  And I have decided that it is perfectly OK to still be working on it.  I feel so much more creative when I am not pressuring myself to be on the ball like everyone else seems to be.  I want Christmas time to be magical and cozy and cheerful, and I want my family to have all of that  as memories, not crazy Christmas decorating Mommy, if ya know what I mean, Ha!  I am really loving our Christmas Tree this year, so I hope you enjoy this post today!

Let me start off by forewarning you, I took some of these pictures during the day time, and some of them when it was dark, so that you could see the way the tree looks during both times of day.  Also, in some of the pictures, like the one above, I had not purchased my Christmas tree skirt yet, and I had just wrapped a faux fur around the bottom to make do.  Another difference is the Baby Its Cold Outside letters on the tree were added after I took the pictures during the day.  I made these last year, and for awhile, I couldn’t find them, but I finally did!

As you can see, my tree has a plaid theme this year, as does all of my décor, which you will see hopefully next week.  The tree is much different this year than it ever has been, and I am in love with it!  I collect Lennox ornaments, and those will always be on my tree because they are near and dear to my heart, but mostly everything else is different this year.  I started with the two different plaid ribbons that are wrapped around like a garland.  I found both of these at Marshalls.  After I had the plaid garland in place, I tied the red and black plaid bows onto the branches.  I made these bows from a flannel shirt I bought at Goodwill.  I cut it all apart, and then I tore it into strips, and I made the edges fringed by removing two or three threads on each end.  and then I just tied them in bows all over the tree, and I just love the way they turned out!

The next thing I added was the little wood slice chalkboard ornaments.  I picked two packages of these at the Target One Spot, and I used a chalk marker to make them look sort of like buffalo plaid.  I did each one of them a little differently though, on purpose, so each of them has it’s own personality!  If you look closely, you will see a few plaid foxes and squirrels that I bought at Lowes.  I think they are adorable!  The Lennox ornaments came next, and after that I filled in spaces with red and gold bulbs, some rustic looking candy canes that I have had for years, some snowflakes, and a few other red or white ornaments.  The vintage plaid suitcase was a thrift store find last winter, and I could not get that thing into my buggy fast enough, I tell you!

In case you are new here, we recently purchased a new sofa and chair, so we had to rethink the location of the Christmas tree this year.  It usually goes right in the center of the window.  This year it went into the corner next to the sofa, but you can still see it from outside of the window, so I am OK with it.  We did have to remove and end table and a small side table to fit it into the room, and they are currently residing in the garage.  The Christmas tree skirt was a Big Lots Find for $20.  I saw similar ones in other stores for more than twice that, so it was a great deal, and I just love the buffalo plaid and the deer head with fur.  I think he will sticking around for a few years!

I purchased a few new Christmas pillows at Marshalls and Target.  I couldn’t resist adding some fun pillows to my new sofa!  The buffalo plaid pillows were a Goodwill find, and they are actually pillow cases, I just folded them in half for these pictures.

If you look closely at the black sequined pillow above and below, you will see a remnant from the flannel shirt that I turned into bows for the tree.  I kept the strips where the pockets were, and I just wrapped one of them around this pillow, which I thought was a such a fun touch and really ties the pillow in with the others.

Our grandfather clock usually sits in the corner, but I moved it because I didn’t want it behind the tree.  The clock is a very special clock that I was gifted by my grandparents.  It belonged to them for many years, and I will never part with it.  I have entertained the thought of painting it, but I have not worked up the nerve so far.  What is your opinion on painting the clock?

I just love the star on top of the tree.  It is red and white striped yarn, and I found it at Target.  I wish I could give you a link to it, but I can’t find it online.  You can see my book page wreath peeking out from behind- still loving that, and so worth the time it took to make it!
