One Room Challenge- Week Two

Hey friends! In case you missed it, last week, I made a last minute decision to join the One Room Challenge and renovate this bathroom in 6 weeks. You can read all about week one right here. I have been blogging now for almost 4 years (this month), and I love to share about making a beautiful home on a tight budget. I am on a journey to make our home tell the story of the people who live and love here.

Yesterday the 20 featured bloggers shared their week two progress posts, and today the guest participants are participating and sharing their week two progress! So for week two of this ORC, as I told you last week, installing AirStone on the walls was on the agenda, and I am happy to say that I completed my goal! Here is a picture of this same spot before AirStone! You also get a glimpse of the vanity before I made it over in the picture below.

I didn’t pay anything for this Airstone, luckily. The company actually sent it to me to do a fireplace surround. And initially I had planned to take it to the ceiling, but changed my mind. So I had a ton of this left over and had been looking for an excuse to use it up, so I concocted a plan to install it halfway up the walls in this bathroom. Being that this is a guest bathroom also, I wanted it to be special. And I really love the complete change this brings to the space! I went back and forth on how far up to go on the walls, and I also debated as to whether to just do one full wall or halfway up all walls, and I decided to do halfway up all walls. When determining how far up to go on the walls, I used my children’s bedrooms as a reference. Both of their rooms, which are right across from this bathroom, have a chair rail on the walls, so I measured how high up it was, and decided to make this stone the same height. Before I started to install the AirStone, I removed all of the baseboards, and I will not be putting baseboards in the room.

As you can see in the photos, I already bought the shower curtain and the basket that I showed in the collage from last weeks post. I love the blues and greens in it, and it has a little grey in it too. The towel bar and towels will eventually be changed out as well.

I absolutely love the added warmth and texture that the AirStone brings to the room. AirStone comes in different colors, and this color is called Autumn Mountain. I have debated a time or two about using a whitewash over it, and I would love to have some opinions on that! What do you think, white wash or leave it as is? Before you decide, know that I plan to paint the walls and trim a crisp white. This room has zero natural light, so I want the brightness the white will provide. The picture you see on the wall is a picture I took of my kids years ago at the ocean. I so love this picture, but I am going to be changing out the wall decor in this room as well.

This is the wall right behind the door, to the left of the sink. I got very lucky that I had stones that were exactly the right length for that small space next to the door frame, so no cutting had to be involved! My plan is to trim out above the AirStone, and there will be a thin picture ledge type shelf right above it. I will paint that white too.

The floor vent you see here is broken and will be replaced with something a little more inconspicuous. I ran into a little dilemma on this wall, and I realized the cabinet door would not open all the way if I took the AirStone clear up to the cabinet, so I stopped it about 1 1/2 inches before the cabinet, and it looks just fine.

Here is a view of this room that I very rarely show on the blog, and can you guess why? It might have something to do with the 1980’s light fixture over the sink! And this house was built in 1996, so I am confused as to why these were in both of the upstairs bathrooms. I thought these were out by the 90’s, but I must be remembering wrong. Needless to say, this light will be replaced- this weekend. And I will be doing a very happy dance! I also have a new towel hook for hand towels that will be installed after paint. The color I chose to paint this vanity is Glidden’s bluegrass white, and I am completely smitten with it!

This cabinet will be removed, and I am so excited for what will be going up on this wall! I bought a cool shelf and a long narrow hanging metal basket to hang here, but I will also be DIYing a shelf. so there will be three mismatched shelves/baskets on this wall, and it will be quirky and totally cool! It’s going to be my favorite part of the room I think! The mason jar caddy is a DIY project that I worked on specifically for this room, and it contains cotton rounds, Qtips and cotton balls.

Two years ago, I renewed the grout on the floor, but I plan to give it a refresh. It has held up nicely, but it is starting to wear. And since we won’t be replacing the tile, I want to make the floor look as fresh as possible. This time, I will be using a color called Dorian Grey for the grout lines. We replaced this toilet last summer, and it was one of the best upgrades ever! We were having problems with this toilet constantly being clogged, so I made an executive decision and told my husband I was purchasing a new toilet whether he liked it or not. and it has never clogged or overflowed since! It said that it would flush 25 golf balls, and I believe it, although I haven’t tried it out, wink wink!

I am very happy with my progress so far, and I have the most tedious part out of the way. LC will be changing out the light for me, with my assistance I’m sure. And then I will be on to painting the walls, trim, and adding the trim above the AirStone. So next week, you can look forward to seeing a new light in here, which has already been purchased.
