On Friday morning, my husband and I were at the hospital waiting while our youngest son, Gavin, was in surgery. It was outpatient dental surgery, nothing to really worry about. That is where we were when we heard the news coming in of the shootings in Connecticut. Over the course of that day, as we learned more and more, we were just devastated. Any time something of this nature happens in a school, to children, it really hits home for two reasons. One, I have children, and two, I work in a school. My heart goes out to each and every family member that has been affected by this terrible tragedy. There are really no words. In light of all that happened and those who were lost on Friday, I felt doubly blessed to spend the day with my husband and my children on Saturday. When it comes right down to it, that is really the only thing that matters, isn’t it? I do not know what I would do without any member of my family, and I pray to God that I never find out. So here are some pictures of our day, the heart of me.
My handsome husband.
A great shot of Bridgeport Middle and High School, Johnson Elementary School and the football stadium.
The baseball complex.
If you look way to the left, and find the row of condos, you will see a pond in the very left of the screen. Right below the pond, the second house from the left is ours.
Then we went to Coleton’s basketball game. His team won!
This morning my husband went with the Bridgeport Fire Department on a Santa run (he is not just a meteorologist, but he is a volunteer fire fighter). They go around the neighborhood and collect food for the hungry. Gavin was so excited to give them our bag of food!
And these are the most valuable Christmas decorations I have. They are cheap, and they are handmade by my children. It doesn’t matter whether they are pretty, expensive, or even if they match. What matters is that my children made them and proudly brought them home to me. And they will have a special place in my home at Christmas time until the day I die.
Take time to remember what really matters in your life. In the whole scheme of things, my house does not matter one bit. What matters is the people who live in it with me. I love my home, and I love to decorate, but all of that means nothing if I have no one to make a home for. Never, ever take that for granted, because we just don’t know how long we will have them. There are so many parents who went to bed without a worry on Thursday night, and their whole worlds suddenly shattered around them on Friday morning. I pray for those people that they will seek God, and that God will bring them the comfort and grace that they so need right now.
