Trash-tastic Tuesday- Chalkboard With Hanging Pegs

November 6, 2012 By Nicki Leave a Comment

Is everybody psyched about the election today?  I am!  For one, I get the day off!  But I am also excited to go exercise my right to vote.  It is an honor and a privilege that I have this right, and you can be sure that I will be there throwing my two cents in!  I hope you all go out and vote too!  That is one of the things that makes America a great place to live.  So go vote everyone!

Last week I posted about a Goodwill makeover I did with some lamps and some candle holders.  LOVE them!  You can see them here.  This week, I have a new project to show you that I completed over the weekend.  This is also a piece that I bought at the Goodwill.  You can see it in the picture below.  It is a sports themed picture with three hanging pegs.  Now, when you live in a house with 5 people, three of them being children, you can never have enough hanging pegs to throw things on.  And I was in need of more!  I do not like the whole sports theme of this picture, and it matches nothing in my house, but I had a dream!  No, it wasn’t for world peace or anything like that (although that would be awesome), I knew that I could make this little piece of someone else’s junk into something super cute!  So I thought about it and thought about it.  What could I do with this piece of junk to make it, well…Trash-tastic??   Oh, I had a few things in mind.  I could make it into a bulletin board, I could paint something on it (but I am not very artsy), I could cover it with something and modge podge it, or, wait for it…I could make it into a chalkboard!  Bamm!  That was it!  A chalkboard!  It was decided, that seemed like the simplest option, and chalkboard paint is all the rage right now!  So here are some before and after pictures of my little jewel.

Goodwill finds

You can also see a sneak peek in the picture above of another Goodwill find.  A bushel basket.  I have future plans for it too.

I paid $2.99 for this!
I decided to paint it white.  I thought that would be a nice simple contrast to the black of the chalkboard paint.  I also planned to distress it after it was painted.  I used a small two inch angled brush to do the job.

Painted a nice white
After the white paint dried over night, I taped it all up using blue painter’s tape so that I could work on the chalkboard.  I decided to use spray paint because I was on my weekly grocery shopping trip to Wally World and that is the only kind of chalkboard paint they had.  So I used Rust oleum black chalkboard spray paint.  I used three light coats of spray paint, and then I let it dry overnight.

we have a chalkboard!
After the chalkboard paint was dry, I removed the tape and began the distressing part of my project.  I just took a piece of sandpaper lying in the garage and went to work on it.  When I removed the painter’s tape, it took some of the paint off the ends of each peg, so that worked out perfect because I was going to do that with the sandpaper.  I also sanded down all of the edges and corners, and a few other random spots.  After that was done I dusted everything off and cured the chalkboard by taking a piece of chalk and scraping it on it’s side all over the chalkboard and then erasing it.  Done!  And here is the finished product!

adorableness!!

And here it is hanging on my wall in our family room downstairs.  It is right off the hallway when you walk in from the garage.  Perfect place for hanging random things.  Lots of jackets and scarves floating around in this house!

I love it!  It is exactly what I envisioned it to be!
This is an updated photo taken 6/4/13.

You can see in the photo above that to the left is the downstairs hallway.  This room is our family room, and we also have an elliptical machine in there.  Can you see the pull up rack hanging in the top of that doorway?  Jason uses it every day, but I can’t even do one!  That was a gift that the previous owner’s left here for us.  Thanks Dianna and Chip!  We also have an elliptical machine in there. My husband uses it a lot, and it is my goal to use it much more this winter.  What do you think of my makeover?  Is it totally trash-tastic or what??

I am going to be linking this post to the November before and after link party on the Thrifty Decor Chic blog.    Check it out!  And while you’re at it hang out on her blog for a bit and look around!  I love her blog, and her home is beautiful!
