Trash-tastic Tuesday- Giant Utensils From The Mission

November 13, 2012 By Nicki 1 Comment

This past weekend it was absolutely gorgeous weather here in Bridgeport, WV.  My husband and I took our youngest son out to the local Mission to see what we could find.  And boy did we score!  I had never been to the Mission before.  And to be honest, I made my husband go with me because I wasn’t sure what to expect.  But it seemed perfectly safe, and I will be going back repeatedly!  This time on my own!  We also made a little stop at the Goodwill, and went to an antique place that was to die for.  I will be doing an entire post on the antique place soon.  We got to spend some time in the great outdoors for maybe the last time before winter.  My son fell in love with a dog named Lucky! A friend came over for a visit on Saturday.  All in all it was a great weekend.  My two oldest children were spending time with their grandmother, which they had not done in a while.

So as I eluded to on yesterday’s post, I danced the jig on Saturday at my Mission finds!  I found something I have been wanting but thought I would never find!  When I found them I think I heard music and Fireworks going off in the background!  And my husband thought I had lost it.  So here are some of the things I saw while shopping.  I did not purchase them all.  Can you guess which ones came home with me?

Here is a selection of milk glass. I often think about collecting this, but never have.
IMG_0950
I thought this soup pot was so retro!
IMG_0951
These are mugs dated May 20, 1977 from my high school Alma Mater, Liberty High School.
IMG_0952
I thought this green dish was interesting.  Looks straight out of the 70’s.
IMG_0953
This was painted on burlap.  The frames were nice and sturdy.  I thought something interesting could be done with these.
IMG_0954
Not really my style but the canvases could be re-used.
IMG_0956
Again, not my style, but nice frames and mats.
IMG_0957
It just seemed appropriate to make Jason and Gavin do a little pose with the giant fork and spoon!
IMG_0958
Seriously!  $10 for this old church pew!  WE don’t have the space for it, but I can totally see it in someone’s foyer right now.
IMG_0959
This end table was solid, very good quality wood.
IMG_0960
This chair could be gorgeous if it had a little tender loving care.  A little paint and reupholstering and it would be quite nice.
IMG_0961
A nice selection of lamps.  I always look at the lamps, so much can be done to make a not so pretty lamp look like brand new!
IMG_0962
This lamp’s brother is sitting on the table in the previous pictures.  See?  A matching set!
IMG_0963
Nice big platters.
IMG_0964
I have no idea what this is but thought it was interesting.
IMG_0965
How many of you remember these old cologne containers from way back when?  Well, here is a whole selection of them!
So, have you guessed yet what we brought home with us?  We brought home two of the above items.  Wait for it….
IMG_1009
The giant spoon and fork!  This is the root of all of my excitement on Saturday!  I have seen these in so many homes online lately, and I just love them!  They are so retro!  They look like something that would have hung in my family home when I was growing up.  I knew I wanted them, but thought I would never come across any.  And then low and behold I found them at the mission!  First I saw just the spoon.  I quickly grabbed it from the wall, and was thinking darn, I wish the other one were here with it!  I looked a few feet to the left, and there it was!  The fork!  I could not grab that baby off the wall quickly enough!  I was in spoon and fork heaven!!

Here is a close up of the detailing on the handles.
Here is a picture of them being used in a dining room on a blog I read daily:
You can find this picture above  at The Yellow Cape Cod blog.
And here is another set with a different pop of color.
These can be found at this Etsy website
I decided to paint them a bright color. And here is the color I chose: Rustoleum ultra cover in satin, the color Eden.
IMG_1077
This is them after a couple light coats of spray paint.
IMG_1078
And here is them after 4-5 coats.  I lost count.  These suckers took quite a few light coats.  There were so many little nooks and crannies.

Updated photos taken on 6/4/13.  They are in my dining room.

Update 11/01/14:  See the current state of our dining room here.

And this is the finished product.  This is my most trash-tastic find yet!  Super excited to have them! They are not cured yet.  Right now they are sitting on my back deck in the sun.  I plan to hang them in my dining room.  I will show you a picture after they are hung.  I plan on painting the dining room next week, and I found these at the perfect time!  And for the next item we brought home.  I was not equally as excited about this end table and my big score, but I was totally psyched that this very heavy solid wood table was only $10.  It is way better quality than the end table that was sitting in this spot in my downstairs family room, so I bought it.  I put the other one out on the sidewalk for free, and moved this one in.  It has some damage to the top, but I will refinish this piece in time.  For now I just put it here to await its makeover.
IMG_1002
I just threw some things on top to see how well I can disguise the damage for now.  You really can’t even tell with these things on it.
Update 11/01/14:  See how I removed the water stains from this table here.
IMG_1006
I haven’t even cleaned it yet.  But this is a shot of the water damage on the top.
IMG_1004
Here is a close up of the wood inlay detail on top.
IMG_1007
I really like this open shelf.
IMG_1008
My plans are to refinish the top by sanding it down and re-staining it.  And the bottom, I might give it a bright color, I haven’t decided quite yet.  But it will come to me.  And here are some other things I picked up on Saturday at the Goodwill.
IMG_1015
A couple of large jars, two wicker chargers, a napkin from Target with the tag still on it, and a few books.  I love Ronald Reagan.  I paid $1 for each, except the books were .25 cents.  I will take the covers off the books and use them somewhere.  The paperback my husband wanted.
IMG_1016
Who puts a bunch of Easter stickers on a jar and calls it a day?  Seriously, It took me forever to peel them off of just one.  I haven’t even started on the other one yet.  I have plans for these jars.
IMG_1017
I like the fabric of this napkin, I have plans for it as well.
IMG_1018
The chargers would be pretty in a place setting or hanging on a wall as art.

How was your weekend?  Did you do any shopping?  Did you get anything done around your house?  We started our last section of cabinets on Saturday and the goal is for them to be finished by next weekend.  We’ll see if we make it.I am linking this post to a Frugal Friday Link Party!  Check it out  here
