Trashtastic Tuesday- Painted Vintage Vanity Case

Hey all!  Welcome to Trashtastic Tuesday! This is a little series around here where I show you something that I thrifted, sometimes I make it over, sometimes I don’t.  Or it may be something that I have owned and I am tired of, or no longer like, so I make it over.  But nevertheless, it is usually something that I paid very little money for.  Do you remember my last Trashtastic Tuesday, when I gave you a sneak peek at the Vintage Vanity case I was working on? Well, this is it all finished!  So let’s get right down to business so I can show you one of my favorite Trashtastic Tuesday projects I have done in a long time, and how I did it!  If you stopped by yesterday for my Fall Home Tour, you got a glimpse of this vanity case in my dining room.
I bought this vanity case at a yard sale over the summer for I think 1 – 2 bucks.  I snatched that thing up so quickly!  I knew as soon as I laid eyes on it that I was going to paint it.  And that is just what I did.  I used chalk paint for the very first time to do this project, and I must say, I love that stuff!  I want to walk around and paint it on every surface in my house!  Is that weird?  Did you know that Home Depot sells chalky finish paint now?  The name of it is Americana Décor, and the color is called Everlasting.

I started by cleaning the case inside and out.  The lining was gross, so I ripped it out.  After it was completely dry, I used a one inch craft paint brush to paint three coats on, allowing them to dry in between each coat.  (Not gonna lie, I waited a day in between, just because I was busy).  I had never felt the finish of chalk paint before, and I was surprised at how soft and smooth it felt, even after only one coat.

I debated whether to paint the hardware or not, and I finally decided to paint it, purely because it was just too difficult to not get paint on it.  Not really something you can tape off.  Plus, I had seen other painted suitcases that the hardware was painted too, and I liked the look.  Also, I want to mention that I started by opening the case and painting very neatly around the inside rim, because I knew I planned on displaying it open once in awhile.

A couple of days after I finished the third coat of paint, I used a fine grit sanding block and a piece of 120 grit sand paper to distress it in random spots.  I just kept rubbing until I liked the look.  I also distressed the hardware.

When I finished sanding it until I was satisfied, I cleaned all of the dust off with a slightly damp rag, and let it dry.  Last of all I waxed it with With the American Décor Crème wax in clear.    I didn’t have a waxing brush, so I used a lint free rag to rub it on.  After it was dry, I buffed it  with a clean rag.  And seriously people, it feels like BUTTA!

This chalk painted vintage vanity case is the love of my life!    Weird?  Again?  Ok, well maybe…but you have to admit, this is totally Trashtastic, right?  The possibilities for how I can use this case in my décor are endless.  I mean really, I could go on and on with the ideas I have.

I have plans to paint the inside a shiny turquoise, but I couldn’t wait to use it in my fall décor, and I wanted to use it open, so I decided to wait for a bit on finishing the inside.  And here is why.  Because I started to decorate for fall, and I wanted to display this open on my buffet.  As I was doing that, on a whim, I cut some burlap fabric and kind of haphazardly placed it inside of the bottom and the lid, you know, to hide the ugly, and I loved the way it looked!  I had so much fun with this piece when decorating this buffet!  So here are a few (5) more pictures of it on my fall buffet.
