Trashtastic Tuesday- Painting Plastic Outdoor Chairs

June 3, 2014 By Nicki Leave a Comment

Welcome to Trashtastic Tuesday!  This is a little series around here where I show you something that I thrifted, sometimes I make it over, sometimes I don’t.  Or it may be something that I have owned and I am tired of, or no longer like, so I make it over.  But nevertheless, it is usually something that I paid very little money for.
Yesterday, I showed your our two tiered deck.  Today, I wanted to go into a little more detail about these brown chairs.  I spray painted these last weekend, and they look like brand new chairs!  Being the fantastic blogger that I am, I did not take before pictures of the chairs, but just so you know, they were a faded hunter green.

Believe it or not, I have owned these two chairs since the late 90’s.  I didn’t want to throw them away because they are very comfortable chairs, and they were still in good shape, other than the faded color of them.  I like them because they fold up, and they are adjustable.  So you can adjust the back on them to lean up or back.

I used Rustoleum spray paint, the kind with the easy spray nozzle.  First though, I sprayed one coat of primer on them.  I used a grey color for the primer.  Next I sprayed 3 0r 4 light coats of the dark brown spray paint.  Spraying in light even strokes.  The third coat pretty much did it, but I did do a fourth touch up coat in just some spots that I thought needed it.

I know I didn’t pick an exciting color.  And here’s why.  The table and chairs I have down on this lower deck have cushions and an umbrella.  I did not want to spray them to match the cushions, because they are probably going to be replaced next summer.  So I decided to go with a neutral color that matched most of my other furniture.  I thought that way, they would match anything I chose for cushions in the future.

They took the spray paint wonderfully, and they really do look like new chairs!  I used one can of primer and about four cans of spray paint on these chairs.  The only cost was the paint, which is a fraction of the cost of new chairs.

Hopefully we will be enjoying these chairs for a few more years.

These extra chairs came in very handy on Memorial Day when we had a huge party for Our Swedish daughter and her family.  We needed as much seating as we could get out here!

Do you have any old plastic chairs that you are thinking of throwing away?  If so, try spray painting a new life into them!  You might be surprised at the results!  I think they are trashtastic!  Have you ever spray painted a new life into old outdoor furniture?  I would love to hear about it in the comments!Link Parties:
