Trashtastic Tuesday- Thrifted Tray Refresh

July 14, 2015 By Nicki Leave a Comment

A Thrifted silver tray gets a refresh with a little gold leaf metallic spray paint.
Hey all!  Welcome to Trashtastic Tuesday! This is a little series around here where I show you something that I thrifted, sometimes I make it over, sometimes I don’t.  Or it may be something that I have owned and I am tired of, or no longer like, so I make it over.  But nevertheless, it is usually something that I paid very little money for. My Trashtastic project for this week is this lovely silver tray that I freshened up!  I purchased it at a thrift store for $2.99.  The tray was in really good shape, but I didn’t like the handles.  They were black, and in my humble opinion, they were cheap looking.  I thought they would look much better a different color, but at first I used it on my bookcase as is.  You can see it in the picture below.

Mixing metal finishes is something that I would have never done a few years ago, but I have been becoming more and more of a fan.  When a room has mixed metal finishes, it just gives so much more interest and dimension to a space.  It gives a room more of a collected over time look, which really appeals to me.  Silver, gold, copper, bronze and brass can happily live together in any room.

Lately, I have been more freely mixing metal finished around my home for a layered and textured look, and I like it!  If you don’t want to mix metals, you can also mix metal finishes to give a room more interest.

I decided that spray painting the handles on this tray a brushed gold would make an interesting contrast with the silver tray.  So I just unscrewed the existing handles, and gave them three coats of Krylon Short Cuts Metallic Spray Paint in Gold Leaf.  And I love the way they look now!  While the handles were off and being spray painted, I gave the silver tray a good cleaning too.

If you look at the picture below, you will see brushed gold, shiny brass, shiny silver, and rustic looking silver, all in the same space.  You might notice the rustic silver candle to the right.  The label on it was wintery looking, so I just cut a piece of printer paper, wrote Fresh on it in green Sharpie, and taped it over the label to make it look more summery.

You might notice my collection of vintage suitcases to the left of my bookcase.  Love them!  But the lamp you can see here is getting a makeover real soon.  I already have the supplies to do it, so now it is just a matter of finding time to get it done.

I love the way my living room is coming together, especially the gallery wall that you can see a glimpse of in this picture (read more by clicking the link).  I also recently painted my living room, and I love the new paint color, which is called Gray Owl.

Three light coats of spray paint on these handles was all this little tray needed to go from drab to fab!  It is just a tiny little detail that some people would not even notice.  But every time I see my silver tray with gold leaf handles, I smile!

What do you think of this small change that refreshed my little tray?  I think it is certainly Trashtastic!  How do you feel about mixing metals in a room?  I would love to read your thoughts!  Feel free to comment in the comment section below, I love hearing from the people who read this little blog of mine!

We will be leaving in a couple of days so I can attend the Haven conference (yay!), and then we are taking a vacation to Charleston, SC.  I have never been to Charleston, so I an extremely excited to visit.  I hear it is really beautiful there, and my daughter and I are planning to tour a plantation.  So I will be taking several days off from blogging.  But when I come back I will hopefully have many fun things to share, and I will have many new inspirations and goals that I gain while attending Haven.  And of course, I will be sharing all about my first trip to a blog conference, so stay tuned!

Do you have champagne taste and a tiny budget like me?  Love fashion, DIY, crafting, all things vintage and thrifty?  Stick with me, I’ve got you covered!
