Traveling West Virginia- Seneca Rocks

April 13, 2016 By Nicki 2 Comments

Seneca-Rocks-39-1

Hey friends!  I hope you are enjoying this hump day so far, it’s all down hill from here, right?  So, how many of you already knew that I live in West Virginia?  Yep!  Born and raised, and have lived here all of my life!  It is still unbelievable to me that some people don’t seem to know WV is a state! Last summer when I was attending the Haven Conference in Atlanta, GA, I told a woman I met where I was from, and she then told me that she had relatives in VA.  Comments like that happen every time I travel, and it never ceases to amaze me!  So I am hear to say today, that Yes, West Virginia is a state.  And WV also gets a very bad rap.  People have this notion that we are all inbred, uneducated, hillbillies.  And I’m here to tell you that is not the truth.  And West Virginia is an absolutely beautiful state.  We love to travel to the many beautiful destinations that WV has to offer, so I thought it would be a great thing to share them with my readers.  We took a day trip to a place called Seneca Rocks over our very short Spring Break, and it was a gorgeous day and a beautiful destination, so I thought you might enjoy seeing some of the pictures I took that day and learning more about Seneca Rocks.  I hope you enjoy!

This trip was definitely a workout for all of us, so not for the faint of heart!  Seneca Rocks is located in Pendleton County, in the Eastern panhandle of WV.  It is easily visible along WV Route 28 near Us Route 33 in the Spruce Knobs National Recreation Area of the Monongahela National Forest. Seneca Rocks is a large cliff that is one of the best known scenic attractions in WV, and a popular challenge for rock climbers.  In the picture below, we were at the base of the rock.  As you can see, there is a trail.  We started out walking the trail, and you can take this trail clear to the top of the rock if you choose to do so.

My three boys did not choose to take the trail.  I was planning on walking the trail to the top, but they decided they wanted to go up the more difficult way, and you can see how that way looked.  My initial reaction was no way am I gonna do that!  But my two boys were already climbing.  I was afraid I couldn’t make it to the top that way.  Not to mention that I am afraid of heights, terribly afraid!  But I knew the guys wanted to climb, and I didn’t want to hold them back.  And LC kept telling me I could do it, so I decided to try.  Up we climbed, and most of the terrain looked just like the picture below.

We were following the blue diamonds like you see in the picture of Mr. 16 Year Old below.  And the next few pictures after that are just some shots I took of the scenery during the climb up the hill.

We didn’t climb straight to the top.  We took several small breaks.  The other may not have needed to, but I sure did!  And they were very kind in being patient with me and letting me stop to catch my breath and drink some water when needed.  This is me sitting on top of the rock that you see in the above picture.

I can’t describe the feeling of elation I had in making it to the top!  I accomplished something that day that I didn’t think I was capable of, something I was afraid of too.  I was so proud of myself!  I was feeling it for the next several days, but I did it!  I can do hard things, and guess what?  You can too! Having courage doesn’t mean that you aren’t afraid.  It means that you have the strength to face your fears, and even though you are afraid, you do it anyway.  and I am so happy that I tried, because if I hadn’t tried, I never would have known I could do that.  Here are a few pictures taken during the time we spent at the top, and this next picture is a selfie I took when I knew I had made it!

And of course, you can’t go up without having to make the journey back down.  We took the trail down, and it took us about 1 1/2 hours to get to the bottom.  Here are some pictures I took along the way.

There is a Homestead right at the bottom of Seneca Rocks.  It was built in 1839, and expanded in the mid 1870’s.  It was restored in the 1980’s.  I believe in the Summer you can actually tour the house, but it was closed when we were there.  Here are some pictures I took of the house and the surrounding land.  I think it is simply beautiful.

I hope you enjoyed this look at Seneca Rocks and the Homestead.  Have you ever visited Seneca Rocks before?  If you have, I would love for you to comment about your experience there in the comments below.  I love your comments, and I read every single one!  Have a great evening!
