Update On Dining Room Progress

November 25, 2012 By Nicki 2 Comments

I am fortunate to be off the entire week of Thanksgiving, and the goal I set for myself was to paint the kitchen and the dining room.  The good news is that my dining room is finished (well, with this step)!  The not as good news is that my kitchen is unfinished.  I worked really hard.  Really really hard!  But with three kids and a dog at home, I frequently had to take time out to do for and spend time with them.  I was also trying to clean at least one room in my house per day and do one load of laundry per day.  Plus, they gotta eat!
We hosted Thanksgiving dinner here at my house, just for us and my parents, so obviously I did not paint that day.  I cooked all day long!  The dinner was delicious, although I did not have much of an appetite after working on the meal all day, but I quite enjoyed it later that evening.  After my parents left, my husband went to work, and the two older kids went to their ma maw’s for a family dinner with their father’s family, I was so exhausted that I put the leftovers in containers and Gavin and I took a big huge nap, all snuggled up in my bed.  And it was glorious!  I saved most of the cleaning up for after naptime, and that was OK!
Anyway, back to the kitchen.  I got most of it finished, everything except above the cabinets, the back splash, and behind the refrigerator.  All of the most tedious parts.  I will get to it in time, but I must pause to decorate for Christmas!  My kids are itching for a little holiday spirit around here!  So that starts tomorrow.  I went ahead and took some pictures of the progress in the dining room so you can see what it looks like before it is decked out for Christmas. You can see before pictures of the dining room here.   And here it is now!

Update January 2015- See our current dining room here.

At first I was very worried about these paint colors, but the more I have lived with them over the past few days, the more I like them.  The dining room already feels like a different place.  Much warmer and more cozy!  Do you see the pictures propped up behind the window?  They are Goodwill finds that are going to be hung in here at some point.

I opted to paint that ugly vent near the ceiling, and all of my outlet and light covers, the same color as the wall.  I have never done that before, but there is no reason for those things to stand out, and I am liking the look a whole lot better!

Say hello to my giant utensils!  Do you love them?  Well, I do!  I love love love them!!  You may not be able to tell in the pictures, but they are a much brighter green than the wall.  You can see more about where I discovered them here.

This chair, and the one now sitting at the desk, were brought in from the upper deck.  I was going to have my husband take them to the crawl space under the house for the winter, and then it dawned on me that I might be able to use them in here!  After all, I needed a chair for the desk, and with six chairs in here that was just enough for Thanksgiving dinner.  So in Jason carried them.  And I love them!  They look perfect in here.  The dark brown brings out the brown in the curtains and the mat of a piece of art hanging on the wall.  So I guess they are keepers and I am going to have to find something else for the back deck come spring.  I was thinking of buying a little café table and two chairs anyway, so now I have an excuse!  The afghan on the chair is my grandmother’s.

Another view of the utensils, and this is a temporary, best I can do for right now, disguise for the dog cage.  It is an afghan of my grandmothers.  My dad recently brought them to me.  My grandparents are in a nursing home together, and the children have been cleaning out their home.  Everything in the house and the barn already had little notes on them as to who they were to go to when they went to start dividing things up.

Do you remember this sketch?  You can read more about it here.  I finally got it framed!  It has been sitting somewhere in my house for at least 6 years.  Talk about procrastinating!  I found this frame on sale on black Friday at AC Moore and I thought it would like nice because I wanted to use the mat that was already around the sketch.  It is a nice brown with a little gold showing on the inside.  And I love the way it looks.  This frame was only like $10!  This print will be in my home for the rest of my life!  It is special!

What do you think of the chair at the desk?  Even my 12 year old son told me he thinks these chairs go great in this room!  I have plans for that burlap wreath, to change it over to Christmas!  I already bought the supplies at AC Moore yesterday.

Notice I changed the mat to that picture of NYC?  You can see the old mat here.  This mat came with the frame I put the pencil sketch in, and it is lined in gold too, so I thought I would just change it out.  I like it better!  What do you think?  I love NYC so much I could have pictures of it in every room of my house!

Say goodbye to the giant utensils, I know you’re gonna miss them!
I have a big post planned for next week!  I went for a tour of a local home, and it will not disappoint!  The William’s family kindly agreed to be my guinea pigs, and I had a great time getting to know them and touring their lovely home.  You will love it too!  Also, I want to see your Christmas decorations!  If you have made something cool, or just have a tree or decoration that you adore, send them my way!  I would love to feature them on my blog!
What do you think of the progress I have made in my dining room?  I have big plans for a stencil  project on the green wall, after my house is Christmas-fied!  Stay tuned!
