One Room Challenge Spring 2017 | Downstairs bathroom makeover plans
Hey friends! Things have been such a whirlwind for me lately, I feel like I literally just finished my mudroom makeover for the $100 room challenge like two seconds ago, and still need to catch my breath from that, and I am already throwing myself into another the challenge.
The One Room Challenge, that is! I have decided to join the Spring ORC, and renovate yet another bathroom in our home. You might remember me participating in my very first ORC in the Fall, when I gave our guest/kids bathroom a makeover.
I am still in love with the way it turned out, and although meeting the deadlines can be stressful at times, I find it is a great way to get my butt in gear to accomplish things, so I am throwing my hat in the ring once again! Because we have a third bathroom downstairs that is in desperate need of some major attention.
Before we get started with the disastrous before photos, let’s do a quick rewind, and let me show you a few photos from my first One Room Challenge makeover, our kids/guest bathroom makeover.
Downstairs Bathroom Before Photos
This next photo is from the MLS listing of our home when it was listed for sale. This is basically what the bathroom looked like when we moved in. Plain Jane and builder grade.
Shortly before moving in my daughter painted this bathroom pink herself. At the time, this was her bathroom, and her bedroom was adjacent to it. We brought the lovely cabinet from our previous house, and though I didn’t really want it there, we hung it temporarily to provide her some extra storage.
We gave this bathroom a mini facelift about three years ago by painting the vanity. We also painted the sink. I DIY’ed some shelves and we replaced the ugly cabinet above the toilet, we replaced the builder grade mirror, and we installed DIY grouted vinyl tile floor.
The one thing I have hated about this bathroom the most from the beginning is that it has no light installed over the sink. We have put it off for too long because we need to hire an electrician to install it. But the time is now, it is #1 on my list of things to do in here.
Our Downstairs bathroom makeover plans
I have to say, in looking at these bad before pictures, I am totally patting myself on the back at how far I have come with my photography skills since then! I still have a ways to go, but my photography has improved so much!
Fast forward to now, and my 17 year old son has taken over the downstairs bathroom and bedroom. This transition actually took place last winter, so he has been living in this pink bathroom for over a year. and it is high time to give him a not so feminine space that he can claim as his own! Don’t you think? So I have come up with an inspiration board to show you all of the plans I have to make this room over.
I made up this collage to show you our downstairs bathroom makeover plans. I’m going for kind of an eclectic industrial farmhouse vibe. There are going to be some modern elements, but also some vintage inspired elements, and a touch of boho. Do you think I can mesh all of that together into a great space? We’ll see!

Your plans look great! Love the colour palette! Can’t wait to see the progress.
Oh Andrea, thank you so much! Loves of work to do!
OK, I had to look up the term ‘wall weave’…and now that I know, I think it will look fantastic with all the other elements you have chosen.
Girlfriend, I just don’t know how you sleep! You have been very busy…but you will so enjoy having it all done and I know your son will be thrilled with his new ‘not pink’ bathroom.
I’m pretty excited to be sitting back and watching all the great ORC projects pass through my computer.
Have a good (busy) weekend.
Hugs, Lynn
Haha, aren’t wall weaves so cute! I am having one made by a friend of my daughter who is making them to raise money for her internship. she is very talented! Yeah, the pink bathroom was kind of cramping his style, especially when he has friends over. It’s become a running joke!
Nicki, I love what your bathroom should look like when you finish; and I know your son will be thrilled, too!

I love what you’re thinking for this bathroom. We have a glacier bay vanity as well and they are amazing – we get so many compliments and people always think it’s custom 😀
Hi Casey! Yes, so far we think it is really nice! And a great price!
I love your Mood Board…especially those light fixtures! Good luck for the next few weeks! 🙂 I did my ORC for my bath last time around and was so glad I did!
Thanks Kristen! I did a different bathroom for the last ORC, and we still are just loving it! I think I may have changed my mind on one of the light fixtures, but not for sure yet, we shall see!
Love the mood board. The glass tiles are definitely in my pallet!
Thanks so much Natalie!
I’m sure your son is going to love anything that removes the pink 🙂 I absolutely LOVE your ideas for this space. If it turns out anything like your previous bathroom transformation, it’s going to be amazing!

When doing makeover be sure to have no electrical lines to avoid dangerous damage. You may need to contact a good electrician if there is any to asses the remodel.
