One Room Challenge Week 2 | Downstairs Bathroom Makeover

April 13, 2017 By Nicki Leave a Comment

ORC Week 2 | Downstairs bathroom makeover

Hey all!  It is week two of the One Room Challenge and we have made some significant progress with our downstairs bathroom makeover.  We have replaced the sink and vanity, and painted the walls, yay!  This vanity has been needing replaced for years, and I am just so happy to have it completed.  What an improvement it is, and the pink is all gone from the walls as well.

If you would like to see the before pictures of this space, and my inspiration board for the room, click here.  You can also check out my first time participating in this challenge in the fall with our guest/kids bathroom makeover.

If you don’t know what the ORC is, The One Room Challenge™, currently in its eleventh season, is a widely anticipated biannual event every April and October. Each round, twenty design bloggers take the challenge and transform a space.  It is hosted by Calling It Home and House Beautiful.  Wednesdays is the day for the design bloggers to go live with their progress, and Thursdays is the day for all of the guest participants to go live.

Let’s get down to it, here is the new vanity!  We purchased this vanity cabinet from Home Depot, and it is a Glacier Bay Vanity Cabinet.  Our old vanity didn’t have drawers, just two cabinets, so it is very nice to have the drawers, and my son definitely appreciates them.  That is a good thing, because this is technically his bathroom because he is the only one who uses it.  Unless I happen to be downstairs doing laundry and need to tinkle! Ha!

Glacier Bay Vanity Cabinet

I had painted our old vanity white a few years ago, and even painted the sink with a Giani Granite kit, but that was a very temporary solution.  And one that I probably would not try again.  It just didn’t hold up long enough to warrant the work I put into it.  and it stained with a  bright pink something or other within only a few months and was literally impossible to get off.  And I tried everything!

Interestingly enough, when my husband removed the old vanity from the bathroom, I was going to take it outside so I could take some pictures of the shape it was in, but it broke into pieces as he moved it! Can you believe that?!?  Here are a couple of nasty pictures of the debris I took with my phone.

And now, behold, our a new quartz sink top with an undermount sink!  It’s like heaven, this upgrade, I tell ya!  We actually bought this piece of quartz off Craigslist, and it was advertised as granite, but I think it is quartz, although I am not 100% positive.  But that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

We actually attached this sink ourselves.  The sink came with screws you could use, which we did, but we also slapped on a super heavy adhesive before screwing everything together.  And you can be certain, that thing is going nowhere!  We had it sitting up on it’s side all attached for months before we bought the vanity.

We also did attach a new toilet paper and hand towel holder, which are visible in the picture below.  They are a brushed nickel finish, and I like how sleek they are.  I think the modern lines will be a nice contrast from some of the other elements that will be in the room.

We painted the walls Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore, which is quickly becoming a favorite of mine, as evidenced by the fact that I used it in our living room and our master bathroom.  I even used it on some file cabinets.  I just think it is such a great neutral grey.  We still have the mirror leaning behind the sink because we will be installing glass subway tiles to the ceiling behind the sink, and it addition we are having a light installed.  We will also be installing some weathered wood shelves over the toilet.  I also have already hung a new shower curtain that has stripes in a subtle color.  I found it at Marshall’s, so I am not able to link back to it because I couldn’t find it online.

I have changed one element that was on my inspiration board last week, and that is the ceiling light.  I found a large industrial looking caged light pendant at Target on clearance for $8.99, and I bought it, and thought, I will take it back if I don’t use it.  And then I happened across these macrame lights, and I thought how cool it would be to do something like that, especially with the macrame wall hanging that I am having made for the space.  So, my plan is to try my hand at making it myself.  I think I can do it.  If it doesn’t work out, I’ll go back to plan A.

So that about sums up our progress for this week.  I am very happy with it so far, and the room already looks completely different, and much less feminine, so even if we stopped right here, my son thinks it is awesome already!  But, there is work yet to do, so please join me again next week to see what’s up in the downstairs bathroom makeover.

Before I go, let’s review my list for the downstairs bathroom makeover.
